You should add screen calibration + thorough testing of the screen behaviour and other issues you might have with your device between steps 3 and 4.

did everything. no dice. seems almost certain that its a hardware problem. that leaves only two options. Master reset and lastly, service centre. I doubt if the master reset will fix the problem where none of these options have worked.
a. firmware update
b. reflashing using SEUS
c. restoring factory defaults on calibration screen
d.Service Tests on display and touchscreen

Considering this problem seems endemic (maybe in phones shipped to India, my earlier P910 has exactly this problem) maybe SE needs to poll its users in India to see if more people have the same problem. India is the second fastest growing market in the world and, given our population and mobile penetration, possibly the biggest. I am sure SE wouldn't want to screw up here. Nokia and Motorola are just waiting to capitalise on this. And an IPhone launch is possibly round the corner - Apple has already tied up with Reliance Digital to open Apple stores here, currently selling ipods and macbooks. And HTC is here in a big way, under their own brand and pricing very aggressively. So is Samsung. The smartphone market faces a lot of heat.

Thanks for all the help, I'll come back to post how the SE Service Centre experience goes. Considering the piece is under warranty, I think I should insist on a fresh box piece.
