@Dogman What I find interesting in their statement is to blame the drop in hi-end devices (which I belive is correct) The thing is,which devices exactly are they talking about?

To call the p-series 'hi-end' by 2008 standards,is a insult to humanity

. I bet Sagem (SE's partner) will overtake them before 2010 if no management changes in thinking occure. Alcatel is even closer thou. And Alcatel's 'hi-end' line up althou suffered just as much, looks stronger

Well at least they'll still break even. I hope the new phones announced recently are available soon to boost thier sales. A drop in ASP is to be expected I guess as prices get discounted; NZ prices have dropped between 20 and 33% on models only released in February - an unprecedented move.

Hi all,
Good points Mario & GoldenFace that currently IMO and it seems many others agree on SE really don't have any high end offerings especially not smart phones.
I would also imagine as most of us are Mobile device addicts or fans of varying degrees we realise that the growth market in mobiles is indeed coming from smart phones. As they move further away from being just Business tools and develop into Multimedia devices. Which is why a lack of offerings in this segment will hurt the most IMO as more and more users demand more from their devices.
If you don't offer these type of devices users will just go elsewhere to get them.
I remember on this forum early 2007 the claims that this was going to be SE's year and that they would sell 200 million devices and be number 2 by year end and we all know what happened next.
SE really need to return to what made them great, with innovative and class leading features and great build quality and firmware along with great customer support.
The changes in these areas is what has driven people away and not just in this or other forums but in the whole market place. Since SE peaked and the changes in direction so has there user numbers and it's all been down. Doing nothing is not an option they fired Miles Flint and now Mr K is in charge but there really hasn't been any real differences seen. Either they return to what made them great or continue to fail is the reality.
I know SE fans are one of the most loyal but when even they start to go elsewhere the writing is on the wall. I know SE fans believe that SE has the best UI and design and quality but obviously they are not the majority otherwise SE would still be 3rd and a challenging for 2nd instead of now being 5th. Something has to change and change before it's to late and one or two models really isn't going to be enough to do it either.
It appears to all intents and purposes we have lost UIQ lets hope we don't lose SE to.
Marc

Considering SE's attitudes to its loyal fans even fifth position is too good - it should be tenth I believe. SE is champion of bugware – cannot or unwilling to remove the bugs even within lifetime of its premiere products. Unfortunately there are still a lot of SE fans like me who after cursing SE and promising not to buy SE phones again comes back to SE knowing that there is 100% chance that the new phone is not different form the phones abandoned by SE prematurely.

SE have only ever been a niche manufacturer, the K750/W800 took them more mainstream with Cybershot and Walkman markets opening up rapidly, but SE is no longer alone in this or even at the head of the game unfortunately. Sure, smartphone and multimedia is where its at ATM and SE are light in this area, but they always have been and I think some major upheaval is due in these markets due to Symbian Foundation getting established, UIQ fading, sharp iPhone pricing, Android OS, Blackberry getting 3G, the endless supply of iPhone clones; I think this market is too volitile to say for sure who will win or lose. I'm just glad SE is consolidating its portfolio with models like C905, C902, G900, G502, Z770/Z780, S302, F305 and W980 (if the price is right).
The C905 shows some of the innovation that SE fans have been calling for, I'm sure some decent smart phones will come once SE works out whether Symbian, WM or both are the way forward. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, criticism of SE's poor performance in UIQ moving forward has been premature. They've obviously seen the recent changes coming and perhaps the X1 and WM is an interim measure while things settle down.

UPDATE: Sony Ericsson Warns Slowing Demand to Hit 2Q Profit
STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson said Friday its second-quarter sales and net income would be hit by slowing demand for mid-to-high end mobile phones and a delay of new products shipped during the quarter.
The profit warning is the second in as many quarters, as the company continues to suffer from its higher exposure to the downturn in the high-end handset market compared with peer Nokia, which has a much broader portfolio of devices in the low and mid-tier.
