A proper running shop should let you return the shoes even if you have worn them.
Thats not quite true,
I have worked for in a number of specialist sports/running shops and once a shoe is worn outside and the sole is marked it`s not possible to return them unless their is a manufactures fault as it`s not possible for the shop to re-sell them.
A good running store would ask questions before recommending suitable shoes even if the customer has a specific model in mind, check the fit once the customer is wearing the shoes allow them to take as much time when trying them and answer any questions the customer may have.

a local shop near me, which has now been taken over, would let you take the trainers home and wear them, and if they didn't feel right, they would let you change them.
Now thats a real shop.
