My X1 only says SkypeForPocketPC is not a valid Pocket PC application.
Any ideas?

If you have downloaded the PC installer file you have to perform the installation via PC .

Or get the cab file here, transfer it to your phone and perforrm the installation directly on your device:

If you install apps via PC, do they leave any "trash" behind? I mean I want those apps on the phone not all over my PC.

@Jabe

Yes, they create files and folders on your pc under \Windows or \Program Files and keep the actual installation flie for a later installation or uninstallation via Active Sync in XP or WMDC in Vista.

So if you want to keep your PC 'clean', you will have to prefer the installation via cab files. Most of the apps are available as cab files and some are available in both formats.

I've only seen a few developers, who provide only pc installers for their applications.

A good alternative file explorer to look out for is Total Commander. Substantially better than the built in file browser. It includes many features similiar to Windows Explorer that you would expect on the inbuilt file browser but that just aren't there.

It also has network browsing and registry editing capability.

For wireless hotspot discovery, wififofum.

Has anyone tried Schap's Advanced Configuration Tool on the X1 ?

Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5 is required.
