Could be a registry problem, I don't think you are getting a 32bit/64bit error. That's just part of the log file.
Click Start RUN and type
%temp%
click ok
see if you can see a .TXT file that relates to this installation
let me know if it exists and whats inside

Oh and i connected the x1 using the usb to my laptop and the software download from windows update failed... total nightmare!

hmm its not what I expected, I can't help you any more I'm afraid. It should just work with vista as the WM Device Center is already installed, and it automatically downloads the required compoments via windows update.
I'm guessing there's something wrong with your windows vista installation.

try doing the following... it worked out for me:
go to settings -> Connections -> USB To PC
uncheck "Enable avanced network functionality"
and vista will automatically install the driver and there you go...
