The black pixels allow the phone to sav epower. Color screens require much more battery power even with the backlight off, so by turning all (or most) pixels black, it saves power.

Now, I wish at least it would show the missed calls / SMS counter next to the damned clock (I do hate it).

Well , I have a completely black background picture on my t68i.
How much power will that use ? Not much ,if what you said is correct.

I like the big clock, but I'd like the date (Sat 11 Jan) displayed under the clock too ...any way to make this happen?

Like the clock or not, I just think it's strange SE forces you to use it!! Their phones are super when it comes to personalisation. And then suddenly, you're stuck with a feature you can't turn off. That's what bothers me. The fact I can't turn it off if I want to...

There is an option that makes it possible to leave te backlight on. Is this good for the battery or the phone in general? No, but at least you can choose to turn it on or off.

And on my T300 I can't see if I have msg of missed calls, when the clock is on. So, I have to turn off keylock and check. If I could disable the clock screen, I could easily just take a peak from a distance and continue to work... Doesn't mean I don't like the clock, but at work it would be easier not to have it.

My previous phone was a R520, and u had a similar thing there. You could activate a screensaver, so only the bottom line of the screen was on, showing time and operator. But you could just as well turn that option off. I preffered it that way.
