I can get hold of a Hong Kong version of this factory unlocked phone. Can anyone confirm if I will be able to update this to newer firmware versions without problems in the UK?
Someone told me that it will only allow me to update it if i am based in Hong Kong as once it realises I am in the UK it wont let me update due to contract restrictions with 02!

@ Masseur - sorry dude. I found the link a few days ago, but couldn't seem to re-navigate to it.
@ Anuj - My unlocked handset is from Italy and I managed to upgrade to 2.2 with no problems at all.
BUT I've read stories where people's handsets have been lockec up again after the 2.2 update.
Another problem, and speaking from personal experience, with getting a handset from abroad is that should anything go wrong with it you would have to send it back to the country of origin - which can be very very expensive and time consuming as you have to pay for postage there and back again!

That's weird - so they dont have a "worldwide 12 months warranty" then?

Nope. The iPhone is the only product not to have this warranty.
When my first iPhone was playing up I took it to 2 Apple Stores. And each one said they would not touch the phone as it was not bought from the UK!
But I know some people have got decent Apple staff to have a look at their handsets.
Its all a matter of luck if the phone goes wrong.
Where abouts are you getting your handset from Anuj?

Thanks.
I have two choices - Hong Kong (through my weblink above to an address in Hong Kong and then bought to the UK for me by a friend) - that phone would have never been locked.
or via post from Australia where it would be an officially unlocked handset.
It's cheaper from Australia by about £120

As much as I hate to agree with a scouser (kidding!

), he's actually right.
Here's the regional list of companies that are obligated to repair a phone based on the country of purchase.
