That's correct and that's what i mean, if you get 3G/H next to the Network bar, you've connected to a 3G network and that consumes more power.

Exactly... the letters are indicators of which network and connection are available at the moment... You are not connected to internet until you see the internet icon (the icon with earth) next to the network indicator...
P.S. It's the same with my p1 btw...GPRS is always available and seem like running in background, but it's not...
It works only if you connect or use some internet application.
