It's called a Bridge, and is a perfectly accepted form factor for a camera.

The pictures that it can produce and the quality is more than adequate for what i want which is for holidays, i don't want to be carrying around a DSLR although i'll more than likely get the 450D at a later date.

450D is excellent.
Btw, if you werent so hell-bent on getting a Canon, the Sony T700 is a pretty amazing point and shoot camera

And for obvious reasons. You'd think a 60-70 year old company which specialises in optics would know a thing or two about cameras. I can't say I've ever seen any pros which don't have a Canon or Nikon in their camera bag.

^ If were going down that route the whole world should be using Leica....

I use Leica Geosystems stuff in the day time and the lens on a Total station is awesome! I can quite clearly make out the moon and craters on it..

Well, okay, Leica too are obviously field experts. I have a Lumix TZ3, and the lens is faultless and excellent in most respects! But, Leica don't do budget. You can't get a Leica Canon 450D equivalent.
Same with SIGMA, Hasselblad, Leaf and Mamiya - no budget option. And I don't even mean budget as in a small bit of money, I mean things like the Canon EOS1Ds MkIII, £6000, if I'm not wrong! I don't think you can find a new Hasselblad for that money, anywhere, ever.
