The built in gps in phone is normally only accurate 10-20 metres, can't be used for turn by turn gps, but if you buy a good exteneral receiver ,then you can use a phone for turn by turn gps.

I didn't need lots of functions in my Garmin but preferred the 300 series as the charge cable is routed into the windscreen mount so you can remove the unit and replace it in one step. Got my 300T with traffic updates for £100 in Tesco.

Hi jlsonic ! Thanks for that ! I'll check it out at Tesco's tomorrow!

I got a Garmin 765T!

Well pleased! It supports the Japanese address book on my phone and also all my music with Japanese titles

Only minor hassle, is it doesn't have my house number, in my street, and this house has been here since 1963

But I know where I live so no problems

Congrats on the Garmin purchase. I have a Garmin myself, and it has worked flawlessly for years.

A phone can never really beat a dedicated unit, especially for a few hundred quid.

But an iPhone? It hasn't even got turn-by-turn directions, you couldn't even begin to use it as a sat nav. Apple have said they don't want people using it in the car, hence why they refuse to sign off any TomTom like software.

Funnily enough, at WWDC yesterday, Apple announced support for turn-by-turn navigation. TomTom also announced that their navigation software (and car kit) for the iPhone will be available later in the year.

Hi !

Garmin 765T crashed and is totally unusable when I really needed it today. It was fully charged, did power up, then the screen of death appeared.

Halfords said they will replace it tomorrow...

Perhaps just unlucky with a duff unit..

unlucky I'd say

I've had a new Garmin unit almost every year now for 20 years (road and aviation) and never had a faulty unit and in all that time I can only recall 2 or maybe 3 restarts and fortunately they were only in the road units. the aviation units I've had have never let me down in flight

thanks for your reply, masseur!

yes, very unlucky with the worst timing !

I am thinking about the 860T, but there are slight differences in function.

My main interest, you guess, is my unit displays Japanese so my mobile's phone book is great on the Garmin.

My question is - did you update the firmware on your 860T? If so, is Japanese now in the keyboard and screen language options?

Thanks for any advice!
