This whole thing is a mess. MP's have little or no credibility left and this at a time when the nation already has enough to worry about with the recession.

Bearing in mind that the vast majority of them are bourgeoisie dinosaurs who don't really understand what email and the world wide web is, I have to disagree. Sure, they need a mobile phone for their work. But unless Apple have released an app which helps you differentiate between your arse and your elbow, I don't see how an iphone could be considered essential for a MP to do his/her job.
Besides, they've managed perfectly alright without smartphones in the past.
