In the UK the Iphone is only available for O2, and I'm on Vodafone. So you really think the N97 would be good?

I'd go for the N97 it has a great feature set, the X1 is only good if you decide to mess around with the rom as the stock rom isn't that great (currently using HTC's touchflo3d on my x1). As some have menioned the HTCs are also an option, the touchflo interface makes winmo alot more accessible but not amazing, best thing to do is have a play instore see what tickles your fancy.

NOKIA have a hard time implementing transitions, i recently modded my S60 and loaded some 3rd party transitions and they were very snappy compared to the ones NOKIA have put in, so if you find it laggy just turn off the transitions and it should be fine.
