@GUCCI : 5 min song in Flac is about 30 MB, depending on the compression level. Although I use Flac for my home listening, I usually convert the songs to MP3 - VBR, target bitrate around 200-256 before transferring it to the phone. This gives me manageable size/transfer times, and I just can not hear the difference. There is a debate if difference between 320 CBR - 256 VBR - LOSSLESS is even audible on anything other than hi end gear, so don't be to bothered by it. For MP3's try to use the latest version of LAME encoder and there shouldn't be any problems. For anyone interested, www.hydrogenaudio.com forum is good place to visit ( or was, hadn't been there in a while )

okay, here's a audio conversion guide:

# FOR ARCHIVE CD's >>> use FLAC
FLAC is losslesss codec, which means no loss in quality, hence largest size. suitable for your cd collection on pc

# FOR SONG ARCHIVE >>> use 256+kbps mp3
MP3 is the most famous codec. Use it to store songs in high quality only if you are worried about space and FLAC. Also, mp3 is played universally, FLAC has some codec issues on most devices

# FOR MUSIC PLAYER >>> use 128 or below AAC+ or M4a
AAC+ or M4a is the newest codec. Used in Players as they sound better at lower bitrates than any other codec. AAC+ is better than an MP3 at 128kbps and below. Above that, Mp3 give better output... Use AAC+ if you want to save space on your music player, and have good music...

P.S. all my files are encoded in m4a on my k800, 2gb card... and they all play fine. As i am not so high on high-Q music, they work quite fine for me... If anyone doesnt like 128kbps AAC+ then. gofor 256kbps mp3 or 198kbps MP3.
The WMA format is too close to AAC+ , but AAC+ beats it in lower bitrates and MP3 beats it in higher quality...
Choose your formats..

When i was only using wma files for ages i never actually realised where to change the settings until i found how to change it by accident. I noticed by default my brothers Nokia pc suite uses aac.

I agree.

Mp3 is universally known but not as good as lossless. Rip @320k for best quality especially if you use "good" head/earphones. I use Shure's sound isolation phones so I can literally "hear" the difference in bitrate quality!

Flac is better as it preserves the music quality. Problem is... not all personal music players (PMPs) recognize Flac!

Apple iTunes's AAC is good as long as you rip via Flac as AAC.
Ipods will recognize the format, obviously, but so do some PMPs like SE phones!

One thing good about having high quality music files and using "good" earphones is that you can turn DOWN the volume on the PMPs, thereby preserving your hearing while listening to CD quality music!

That's the primary reason I got the Shure earphones and rip at high rates!

One more thing : transcoding from lossy format (MP3,AAC,WMA...there is a losless WMA though) to another lossy format is bound to degrade the sound quality and should be avoided if possible.
