Ok bit of an update, i tested the old battery with a Multi meter and found it was totally flat, so i got a new battery and asked the shop to charge it for me and put that in the phone.
When i put it in there was still nothing so i played with all the buttons and held the On button down for 20 seconds, the screen back light, the call and Call end lit up. I tried to do do it again and it wouldn't so i'm back to where i started and my computer still doesn't pick up my phone when i connect it up.
Sorry to show my complete lack of phone knowledge but when you refer to Flashing the phone is that the same as the SE update? Is this the sort of thing you mean?

the phone still can be switched on even though for a short while, imo this is a fw issue and the solution is to flash the phone. there are many tutorial about these flashing procedures and one of them is
