A friend has installed it on a different partition far than windows xp, but he had a lot of problems with his pc , for exemple he lost all his files , and the comuter didn't reconize any system (ubuntu and xp) I think it's a little dangerous distribution

Using backtrack as a desktop OS is like using a workbench for a desk, it's not suited. Use backtrack from a live DVD or better USB stick and you have one of the most powerfull tools when it comes to security/pentesting. For anything else there are much better distro's out there. Backtrack is for security related things and nothing more.

If you need a stable and secure desktop OS just use Ubuntu or if you're less lazy grab Debian, FreeBSD or if you want even OpenBSD for optimal security. Also any Linux distro can be made very secure if you know your way around. Recompiling your kernel with extra's like SELinux and grsecuritu extensions.
