I rarely use handwriting, but I love the virtual qwerty keyboard!
I find it to be just as fast as T9, some times faster.

I do however see the need for T9, but only for one-handed-on-the-go-or-in-the-car-driving- use!

Obviously there is a T9 implementation for Symbian.

Yes, on top of Symbian 6.0; for all we know, there could be 3 reasons for not including T9:

1. SE didn't think it would be necessary considerig the alternatives

2. Tegic's T9 doesn't work on Symbian 7.0

3. Jot refuses to "share" a phone with Tegic (exclusivity clauses)

SE did do right in not including t9 on the p800. me i do not use t9 for it is annoying and i use my own shorter, texting abbreviated slang when i do sms.

Ericsson/SE did not renew their license to use T9... this is because Sony developed a newer 'predictive text' input method... parts of it were seen on the T68i, it works similar to MS Word's Auto Complete... If you didn't notice it, the T68i can, with certain words, complete the whole word for you only after 3 keystrokes.

I was never fond of T9... I loved the predictive text on the T68i... I didn't use it that often, but it is useful for one-handed typing operations... For me, SE should include it in the P800. Whether you use it or not, that's up to you. I do NOT want T9, I want Sony's Auto Complete...it worked really well on the T68i.

Right now, the P800's SW has a lot of pieces missing; browser, glitches, etc..etc... it's only been out for about a month or so... let's wait a while to see what future SW upgrades will bring... Remember, we're all still running the FIRST commercial release of the SW. Opera isn't even in it yet!

I used T9 with my N7110 (all the time). It is the only alternative available for that model. Now that my P800 has handwriting recognition, I am using it exclusively (except on very very very few occassions when I only need to reply a Yes, or No, or OK and not even need to open the flip cover) because I normally reply to 2 out of the 3 types of messages (SMS and E-mail, I seldom receive MMS messages). And that's beside posting to Esato, of course. I could not imagine myself composing a reply to an e-mail message or a reply to and Esato post using either the real or virtual keyboard.

BUT....I still think that having the T9 would have made the P800 more than perfect (coming from a T9 user). It is always nice to know that it is there when I want to use my flip or virtual keyboard.

@bloomp:

I sympathise with you. These people obviously have not heard what you said. You can look for a Nokia to do texting after a few beers yes, but are you going to change your phone to a Nokia just before you go out to the pubs? Wake up your freaking idea and find some common sense. We people bring our P800s everywhere, every single frigging where. We email on the go, play games on the go, surf the net on the go, watch videos on the go, listen to mp3s on the go, but we ALSO text on the go. Texting on the toilet bowl, texting in the trains, texting while driving, texting while clubbing. Obviously you guys are just businessmen and not much else. It's stupid to assume once people are like 'smart businessmen' and do all of the above, texting just becomes unimportant. People like bloomp and me are just normal blokes who text while doing other things. There is no substitute for T9 in these situations.

And for 'smart businessmen' like you are, obviously you can't count the amount of calories used writing a word 'stupid' on T9 vs jot: 6 short, curt key presses vs 8 strokes of 1cm average.
