The main problem with PDAs that want to be phones, is that they all look alike! I don't care who makes them... if they're running Microsoft & Intel... there's nothing to distinguish one from the other... they think it's like the PC market... they think customers WANT communcators that look like everything else out there.
Running microsoft restricts form factor design... first of all, all of these M$ machines have to run 320x240 screens. That's fine, if all you want is PDA functionality. But what if all you want is a small phone with MMS? The 6100 does that just fine, and doesn't look like a picture frame with an antenna! Want some PDA functionality & a camera? The P800 does the job at 2/3 the size w/ 3x the battery life of the BEST PDAs on the market.
Take a look at all the M$ products out there... all the ones running Smartphone 2002 look the same, regardless of who makes them. All those running PocketPC look the same as well. There's only ONE, and I really mean only ONE manufacturer running M$ that actually stands out... Neonode. But everyone else has the same form factor. This is M$ tactic so that the consumer won't be 'loyal' to the manufacturer, instead, will be loyal to M$.

It's not like there's no MS PPC phones around. Look at the O2 and the HP Ipaq 5450, and this won't look as innovative as you think. (hint: just landscape screen with addn keyboards)
