apaman,

Thanks for the info, that's great news. I wonder when we can expect ATT to offer gsm service in Southern California...?

I did a test here in LA but ATT didn't show up yet. I guess I'll try again in a different part of town. Thanks again, I am feeling a glimmer of hope of better coverage sometime in the near future now.

Oops, sorry apaman, I now see you're saying May in your previous post. Thanks again.

At least I am working my way up to 10 posts so I can get the pic of my T68 up next to my nicname.

apaman, I live in california, south of LA, and I did a manual search an could not find ATT. Do you know if they will provide service over here?

Thanks,
Andre

Thanks for all your replies!

Apaman, do you work for AT&T? Are you a beta tester for the AT&T GSM network? I guess the real question is: Can I become a GSM tester for AT&T in S. CA (if there is such a thing)? Like I said earlier, I would rather stay with AT&T than have to switch carriers. Especially if AT&T's GSM network will be available here in May...

Once again, US carriers are not getting it. Att has sporadic GSM coverage to say the least. Since Voicestream already has most of the US covered, would it not make sense for Cingular and Att to obtain the license to use existing towers?

No, what they do is go out and transform their existing towers which takes time, money and makes for bad coverage

We just don;t get it :/

It is a sad state of affairs, indeed...

I can't believe that we are so far behind in cell phone technology!

I completely agree with Harleydog, if these companies learned to cooperate, we would be much farther along... Oh well! Look where we are with the mess called HDTV!

For those out there that say competition breeds advancement, bullshit; in this case, competition has resulted in a hodge-podge of crap. Just think once Att and Cingular migrate to GSM, there will still be Sprint and Verizon on TDMA/CDMA; will they become obsolete? Who knows what the US market will encouter; I hope Voicestream is smart enough, and not arrogant enough, to share their towers and position themselves to becomes better and stronger

I am testing for At&t south of Orange County, and let me tell you the coverage rules they are building thier own towers, not like voicestream that when they hit CA will share Cingular towers. So wait and at&t will bring releafe to southern california, I don't know the rest of the US at&t connection but at&t is going all out on edge, expect at&t to be the first carrier in the US to go to edge and cingular the last.

Apman,

maybe they are approaching Caly different than they are Texas, because let me tell you their coverage is horrible; own towers or not. i am really disappointed. A friend just got an Att Gsm phone and she cannot be reached anywhere. She went to the airport yesterday and she was out of range.
What kind of bs is that, and why wouldn't Att share with VS and vice versa

Harleydog,

Are you sure? I just checked VoiceStream's Website and I couldn't find San Jose Let alone California in their coverage area.

What's cingular's Web Address?

Doesn't anyone Know if there's GSM in San Jose? Sigh..

Iand I thought With a Tri-Band T68, I'll be able to be contactable in USA!!

Another thing, Anyone knows if SMS (receive) costs money? I know Sending(Of course) costs money.

Thanks for any and all help guys/gals.
