What you will find is that most of the people in the phone shops are not that good with information. This does not include a small minority of those people who do actually know what is on the market and which companies are releasing their products and when.
Unfortunately, those "supposedly" knowledgable staff usually say stuff like "you have false information", "I should know, I work here and you don't" and "we have direct contact with manufacturers" seem to thrive on this them and us mentality and prevents them from taking onboard any information, yet also makes them feel power-crazed arrogant and egotistical.
Best solution would be to prove them wrong... bring a printed web page, catalogue or magazine clipping featuring the
, nok or any other phone brand in question, and shove it in their face when they deny its existence. Alternatively, just tell them that they need remedial training - most you will find do need it.

No it's not true - the Vodafone Live! menu icons are built into the phone itself.
A firmware update I believe "in theory" could replace them but when firmware updates are released they release several versions for the various customisations so there will be a 'GSM stock firmware upgrade' and a 'Voda Live! firmware upgrade'. Problem will be finding someone willing to upgrade your firmware with 'the wrong' update - might be tricky as they are supposed to go with what is already on there - I'm not sure if there is any particular risk of damage with uploading a different firmware version though.
I have also heard that the customisations are held in a different part of the phone's memory that isn't changed with a firmware update anyway in which case no firmware update would never get rid of them. I'm not an expert in the field though - just going by what I've been told from various respectable sources.
Best bet will be to ask a local SE service centre about it I expect - or perhaps one of the unlocking agents who post on the uk.telecom.mobile newsgroup.
Personally I thought the risk of not being able to get rid of the naff icons was too great and so took the phone back under 14 day return and am now waiting for it on Orange (who have hopefully left the phone relatively unscathed!)

I can live with the Naff icons. If I can just get rid of the soft button goes to Voda live and the other automatic connections to voda live.
