Imagine that you are listening to an orchestra. There are loads of different instruments that can play.
If a mobile can only play 4 channels then its like only 4 of the instruments can be played at the same time. All of them can play, but only 4 at a time.
You can put a poly tone that has more than 4 instruments playin at once onto a phone that can play only 4 (7210 for example) but unless your lucky it wont sound right. Bits of it will be missing.
A phone that can play 16 channels can have 16 instuments playing at the same time. This usually means that any midi file will sound ok.
The more channels that a phone can play, the more complex the song you can play.
