the one you got from Sony... is it a straight one like Maplin's or the bend one with small cable. I would not mind a sony for that price if its convinient

I got one of those things from Maplin after two problems:
1- got the 79p one which was mono - make sure it's the stereo one, which is about 3 or 4 quid if I remember correctly.
2- I tried at least a dozen high street shops and half of them didn't even know what I was talking about.
So.... get the STEREO on from Maplin's
