Are you sure it's a datacable you've got? I got a USB chargercable, but it only covers the chargerconnectors on th ebottom, not all of it as the data cable does.

could you download mopher.exe from
www.mophungames.com, run the application and tell me if it can find the phone, because it does not need mpm to run.
it is in the what how part of the site.
or download mypictures from
www.clubsonyericsson.com and try seeing if that will find the phone.
