Go with Oggs. Use a variable bit rate with an average of 64kbps and you will get very decent quality audio with a really small file size. I rip whole CDs to ogg and they are not much more than 20mb for the whole album. This means you can fit 5 or 6 whole albums on your P800. And with the way OggPlayer is coming along so damn nicely, who wouldn't use Oggs?
PS. dBPowerAMP is all you'll need to do all your ripping, including downsampling audio into small .wav files to use as ringtones. I like to keep the audio pretty clear so I have a few 20 second .wav ring tones that I've brought down to about 400kb.

Again, maybe a little more clearly:
- if you want MP3's for a bunch of reasons (MP3 Player, AV system, car, whatever), then the references above are good. MP3 is cool because it's compatible with a bunch of players.
- but if you just want to put music on your P800 DON'T use MP3! They take too much valuable memory space. Convert your CDs to .oggs using DBPower AMP.
