Ok,
I'm a lucky user who's got a 64Mb stick (btw, it's enough for me, it's not even half full...).
My internal memory is always 8 Mb free, even if i start taking photos it'll automatically store them in the stick, so...
Bottom line: always check for your free internal memory from times to times and i would advise to try to have at least 4-5 Mb free.

From my experience buying it and living in Portugal:
They didn't even noticed it.
It came on an cushioned envelope and i didn't had to pay IVA (VAT for you in UK).
Here they just check packages with more than 1,5 - 2Kg (info from inside).

First off, as teg so rightly points out above, other operating systems have proper memory management and don't nosedive when you top off a drive. I can personally vouch for OS X and Unix, and I'll make an educated guess that Windows, etc. and even probably Palm OS can handle "disk" management.
The fact of the matter is that the Symbian file system on my P800 was corrupted when the internal memory was full. I do not have a memory stick because I don't have any use for it outside my P800, and I consider it insulting that Sony is forcing me to buy their expensive proprietary memory format for this device only. If I had understood that this device requires a memory stick for proper operation, I would probably have purchased one. Nowhere in the manual did I read: "Make sure you keep a few megs free in internal memory, since our developers couldn't put together a proper file system." From that perspective, any potential buyers of this phone should slap an additional $75 onto the price of this already expensive phone, as you are apparently an idiot if you didn't know that the memory stick is required for operation.
The fact of the matter is that I went around snapping photos at high resolution, thinking that this phone would be able to manage. It didn't and now I've lost some pics and some data as a result. Not to mention all the calls that I missed while I was trying to battle through the molasses-mode that results from filling up the internal memory. It was the base station and synching software that prompted the meltdown (probably because it requires some internal memory to initiate the connection). Also, the reason that I lost data is that the PC software won't back up your device after you've crossed a certain memory usage threshold. That's right! If your phone is nearly so full that it will soon crash, the software won't back your phone up because the internal "disk" is full.
Again, some of these issues may have been addressed in firmware updates, but I cannot get these updates without giving away my phone for a week or two (not an option.)

Sorry but Palm OS goes completely down in space is full...
I did the same with photobase, as a trial (I knew what i was doing) sending 20 jpegs to my 8mb palm tungsten t. The hotsync utility stopped sending files when the mem was full, and when I woke the palm up it worked, but if i pushed any of the drop down menu's it would say "Unable to init main.c, mem full !!!" and I would just have to reset every time..!
Now of course without accessing menus and full memory I couldn't erase anything or install a 3rd party app to delete without the using contextual mem, so I had to do a hard reset and erase all the ram...!
So yes palm OS does freeze when ram is full ! (at least in my case with palmos 5)
If you don't like the p800 so much go get a 3650, they you can really complain about the lack of a touchscreen.
I agree the p800 might not be perfect but it's certainly still the best phone in its class...
You were complaining about other users not warning you about memory management problems, well I myself have read several threads about it here in esato a while back and since you are reading these threads you should have been perfectly aware that there was no 'easy' and near way to upgrade your p800 !

I must say that whoever programmed the system could easily have overcome this problem:
If installing_new_software or storing_something then
If spare_memory warn user or cancel_install
end_if
end_if
Aha, but if we have a bunch of moron programmers or we train a few monkeys (and I am not blaming the cousins of the homo sapien family !) to do the work badly (just to reduce costs) then the product you get reflects this !
Now, who put that GOTO in the assembler code.....
