Can the R380s firmware be upgraded to R380e at a Sony Ericsson Service center through EMMA II server or should it be done through the unauthorised route?

yes it can be upgrade at an offical
servicepoint, just remember that if you have a backup from before the upgrade this can't be used once the phone has the R380e firmware... so if you want to save contacts, calender and notes, sync it with outlook.
