The operator blocks the phone by the imei (serial number of the phone).Once this has been done the phone can never be used as a phone again as it will not accept any sim card (you will get such messages as 'sim card registration failed').All other functions of the 'phone' (if it can still be classed as one) will work.Hope that explains it. (if the imei of the 'blocked' phone is changed, phone will become functional once more) *evil* :)

Located on Ireland there is an international database called EIR, here is the status of the IMEI numers stored, they can have three "states":
- Whitelisted, ordinary phones that are used by customers
- Greylisted, can recieve calls, but not make calls
- Blacklisted, can't make/recieve calls
When a network provider grey/blacklist a phone's IMEI they change the state in their own local EIR database, then this database is synced with the database on Ireland so that all providers syncing with the international database will have the grey/blacklisted phone in their database as soon as they sync with it. This way a stolen phone can't be used in any country.

makes me feel much better knowing those jerks who want to steal my P800 wont get so much as one phone call from it!
either way, I hv a security code everytime the sim is changed

Well, I was using a 3210 as a back up phone when I lost it. It had a T-Mobile sim in it and I was using my T300 on o2 but I swapped my T-Mobile & o2 sims around a lot!
I phoned up T-Mobile to stop anything going on my phone bill and they ended up also blocking my T300 (although when I phoned them, they claimed they didn't). Also, they managed to blacklist a MT50 I was using but they admitted to that one and rectified the mistake in about 1 and 1/2 days.
I had to get my IMEI on my t300 changed for it to work again.
