I agree with alan's reply. This post was posted from a T68i

If it was for security reasons, then I would understand.
But this only happens to the sms, not the e-mails in a t68.
Why delete the sms:s for security, while the e-mails remain?

I think the SMS is stored in another part of the memory then all the other items. I can store about 100 smsses before the memory is full. But then I still can have about 400kb free for pictures, mms and e-mail.

Maybe that explains it a little?

In my old nokia the only thing that was ever deleted was the recent/missed calls list, everything else stayed. I think it is completely pointless to have SMS deleted but everything else remain...

But that's just me...

I have a similar problem... With about 10 SMS messages in the inbox, memory says about 20% full. On three seperate occasions I have turned the phone on and the new-sms icon is flashing. I go into the sms menu and ALL my inbox is gone! Very annoying. The last time it did it the memory after self deletion read as 0% for phone, 255% for SIM !!! Turned off and on again and now both read as 0%.
Anyone else this problem .. any ideas ??

@goweed: No its not that u posted it in the wrong place, its just u posted it in half of threads on esato . But seriously, of it happends often, then i think visiting SE service would be wise decision. Never heard it happening on other phone. Only thing that comes to my mind u could try is master reset (i doubt if it'll help) or try if it still occurs with other sim.
