I'd be careful, I've heard that 3 have been doing everything they can to stop USIMs (3G SIMs) working in GSM handsets, also I think the later USIMs may actually be handset locked (i.e. you can only use them in the handset you buy them in).
This is very paranoid behaviour from 3.
The reason you might see a lot of NEC 808s and NEC 808ys on EBay, is that they sold for nothing to £50 on Pay & Go.
Unfortunately nobody has these in stock anymore.

You CANNOT use a 3g sim in a 2g phone.
You can however use a 2g sim in a 3g phone if it is unlocked correctly.
The best ones were the 7600s on Amazon, I bought 7 of them at £40 each and a unlocking cable for £6.
Sold the lot on Ebay for £95 each inc p&p within 24 hours.
Amazon have not had any since

I've got an old 3 contract sim card laying about which was disconnected a while back. I don't know if that would be any use to you. I also have a Motorola A830 (3G) phone for sale that you could use it with!
