Taking into account that the current cam produces 0.1megapixel pictures, and althought software can perform interpolation to increase the final resolution, I think 1megapixel is probably a bit unrealistic.
Although some hackers have hacked phone firmware in the past this increased resolution would probably have to be done by SE since there is no java API for the cam AFAIK.

I havent been able 2 find the exact megapixel specs but my m8 has a 7650 and I have recently aquired a 3650 on upgrade and I am amazed at the clarity of the photos taken by both, so much so that I really dont think I am going to use the crap P800 cam no more.

umm... i am a chemist so not know as much about all these technical aspects of digicameras...
but i've always thought the resolution (mp) was determined by the hardware alone, ie the camera components itself
thereby if you wanted to improve the resolution you will have to physically change the hardware, new camera fitted?
i have never heard of software capable of increasing resolution on a camera without other mods... correct me if i am wrong (please let me be wrong lol)
and if this is true.. wow... the T610 will go down in the mobile history books as prob one of the best phones made for its time

The max resolution is determined by the chip alone. (the chip has a definate number of light sensetive "points") There is no firmware upgrade that could ever increase resultion. There could be a firmware upgrade that could increase the quality thought, by doing better image processing, white ballance, contrast, etc...

Many standard digital camera do this. For example, look at the
Fuji Finepix 401 zoom (and many other fuji cameras).
This one has 2.1 million pixels but actually records 4 million because the firmware in the camera does interpolation before writing to the smartmedia card.

Each cell will produce a pixel for the image, so you see, there is no way to change the max resolution whithout physically replacing the chip. It's possible to take pictures in resolutions lower then the max resolution, but not higher.

By the way, CCD and CMOS are two different technologies used to capture the image...

I agree with you that the hardware cannot produce a pic of more pixels than the hardware supports but I still think you are missing the point about interpolation.
Interpolation is where the software (firmware) takes the pic produced by the hardware and makes up extra pixels by extrapolating between the pixels produced by the hardware. Thus the actual picture you get is at a higher resolution than the hardware can actually create itself and this is what the Fuji cameras, and others, do.
