fixed the problem it was because the wires were covered in plastic to keep em insulated so the only bit actually connecting was the ends which were cut. So i stuck the wires under a lighter the plastic meleted away wrapped the wires around the connector then threw on some solder for good measure i now have a 2.5 - 3.5 converter which is better than the one i bought from

Err, got to Maplins, spent 75p and buy a 3.5mm to 2.5mm jack converter!

too unpractical sticks out too much and can easily bend the 2.5mm PCB connection so i strongly recommend you stay away from this it easily pops out the phone as well i.e. i'm listning to my music and stand up the thing unplugs and the audios re-routed to the main speaker this is not good in an environment whihc must be quite etc etc.. this thing has countless faults. I am much happier with the real deal.
