I see ur point and i agree.I`ve thought about it when i first saw the pics of the upcoming (at the time) P800. Every1 else may and can think diff`rently, it`s their point.

Euh.... The P800 is closer to a Ericsson R380s then to a Sony.
He has the same principe of flip with a contact on touchscreen, a touchscreen with stylus, using an OS Symbian, a lot of memory, PCsuite, synchronisation,.... he just only use the jogdial of Sony
En by the way.. it seems that the P900 has in fact now the design that Sony try to gived to the P800 and that Ericsson refused ...

I agree with you people that it has a sony design but, I really can't say It's a copy of z7, more like a copy of a NS705 dvd player (it has a jog button),
The only thing that I can see it's the jogdial but as Vlam said that doesn't make a phone

Look at the Ford Focus, Fiesta & Mondeo.
How would a company achive a brand & recognission without handsets sharing the same form factor?!? If you were not told the brand it is instantly recognisable as a sony/ericsson because of jog dial etc

Plus I have held one, or are you telling me I was dreaming?

The p900 is very Sony.
The most striking thing is the brandname-logo, which is in complete Sony-outfit: metallic with lines and slightly coming out of the surface, just like Sony has always done. It looks expensive and well-finished.
Also the colours of the body and the shape of the top and bottom of the shell strike me as sony. The two pictures next to each other make that obvious. The curved line of the frame around the screen of the older Z5 is the same as on the p900. On the older sony it resembles the curves of the TV's they had at the time. Very clever familiy-style application. Also the idea of a flip covering a part of a larger than usual screen obviously comes from the sony people. I can imagine a meeting in which the Ericsson people try to hold back the flip and the tansparent thing on the p800 came out as compromise. Ugly. Without it the P800 is really nice, with the flip it loks like a 'i can't decide' thing.
I like the design of the P900, especially the back with all the different holes and rubber things and the rubber pads for stable sitting. Really beautifil. Like the holes behind which the 2nd loudspeaker is placed resemble holes of a computer to let air into or out of a fan. This resemblance gives the phone a very "powerful machine" look. Also the rubber pads and covers send out the message "connectable", "machine", robot etc. This is how machines and robots in comic books are drawn - no offence, on the contrary. They put imagination into their design.
How much I admire the design of the P900, the P800 is more of a friendly thing I think. P800 is more suited for private life situations, it is softer edge, more fun, more sensual in its lines. The P900 is a machine. You use it because you have to. You use a P800 because you want to.
If SE wants to increase market share they have no option but offering some more types of design: the technical look of this P900, the fresh, bright and creative designer look of all the other t/zXXX phones and the business-look of the T230 all attend to different tastes.
I only wonder how they are going to keep a family look among these lines.
