As far as the 1260 and V66 picking up better, since they are both TDMA I'm not suprised. Its the same way where I live. The analog phones pick up alot better, unless of course I'm in town. But my P800 seems to have the best reception out of all the phones I've had.

With the coverage pattern in the US I really don't understand why the US carriers have never really marketed GAIT phones like the S46 and T62u. Or they could have used the 800MHz band for GSM as well as the 1900MHz band. If the carriers would have used the band the cell phone manufacturers would have built phones to accomodate them. The 800MHz band isn't too far from the 900MHz band used in Europe and would get far better range than 1900MHz-only phones.

@nokevin It's the price of design. But I don't have any problems with it. The reception is always good. Only in one village I have not signal. But there are hills around and no phone has signal. Tried GD67, V2288, C230, C45, 3510 and 3510i.

Transmitted on lower frequencies actually allows lower power transmissions. Lower radio frequencies don't have as many attenuation problems as higher frequencies do. An 800MHz signal is going to be usable at a much greater distance than a 1900MHz signal at the same output power.
Apparently there is a little bit of noise in the US about AT&T and Cingular deploying GSM on 800MHz. The Motorola V600 and NEC 515 are quad band GSM phones. They operate on 800/900/1800/1900MHz with no problem. The US has been using 800MHz for years with TDMA/AMPS and it makes sense to upgrade those towers to carry GSM. I've been all over the US with a TDMA/AMPS phone and except for a few areas on desert in New Mexico and Arizona I had pretty good coverage pretty much everywhere. I'd really like to have GSM coverage like that, especially since I'm paying as much now for GSM as I was paying for TDMA then.

I live in Belgium (father is american and mother is belgian) and my net is Proximus (900 and 1800). I'm using a T300 (900-1800-1900).
Last week, I went to Seattle to visit family. Actually, I don't get any troubles while using my phones ! Reception was excellent.
But I'm wondering why don't American Providers use European Modern Frequencies ?
