It's impossible

The free hotmail is an advertizement driven buisness. They don't have POP3 functionality (for obvious reasons).

One can either use a web browser to access the mail...
..or use a gateway of some kind (3rd party)

I have just searched in Hotmail again and even the one account that I actually pay for makes no mention of any pop3 or imap servers for retrieving the hotmail, so I dunno.

I have a program on my pocketpc that can implement an inbox in much the same way that outlook express does and it even incorporates the messages into the standard inbox so I use that most of the time.
