i forgot where I saw it, but: children ages 8-12: 78.4% have phones
as for 12-18: 94.3% have phones. And it's not that he's too young to have a phone, he really needs one. In America, children are almost as busy as grown-ups, going to school, friends house, extra curicular activities like sports, band, and so on, it's hard to keep track on where the child is at half the time. Also, when they need a ride, it's better, and cheaper than always recieve a collect call. As for carrying change around, it's not a good idea. Just think when you were 11, when you had money, you would probably spend it on candy the first chance you got!

OK so I'm old fashioned!
(Had a feeling I was going to get flamed for that...)
Mobile phones was hardly invented when I was 11. They existed, yes, but they were the size of a suitcase.

I think kids should be out klimbing trees, playing football, go rolleblading, fall over sctatch their knees and have fun. Not play around with mobile phones and Playstation and X-box.

(stir, stir... )

Oh yes, stir, stir. There is nothing that says that getting a mobile phone will stop kids from doing those things. They can't (swedish) knappa on thier mobiles all day. In the begining yes, they can but then thier just using them as much as a ordinary mobile phone but have more fun when they do. I may be wrong but at least I do...
