Come to think of it, given the definition provided by Cytech, it becomes clear to me that the only true smartphones are those produced by Ericsson/Sony Ericsson - the only ones that allow touchscreen input... ;-) This message was posted from a T310

so how would you classify XDA, XDA II etc? they seem to fit the description too?

Those are more closely related to PDAs rather than actual phones and are also not largely available, i.e. selected markets and/or operators only. Satisfied? Though I can predict your answer. This message was posted from a T310

Ok, I do agree they are not primarily a mobile phone so they don't quite meet the criteria there. Although they are becoming more available as the XDA II now comes in an unlocked non carrier specific version and also as a rebadged model called iMate.

I guess a phone company would define a smartphone as being primarily a phone whereas a PDA company might define it as having phone capabilities.

But yes, I cannot right now think of another non phone that meets the criteria mentioned.

The definition is not valid anyway, as being set by (Sony) Ericsson themselves, using their own phone(s) as criteria. I don't know why, but I resent quite strongly the XDA & family (though I must admit I did NOT have any experience with them for the aforementioned reasons). The Sendo X seems to look more like a phone, but once again I doubt it will be available outside the UK (it is made by a British company anyway, isn't it?) and I don't remember it having a touchscreen either.

Somehow I feel that some of the current and alomost every upcoming phones have lost their "feeling" (as is the case with current computer games and movies). They just don't feel right. Or I may be getting too old. Damn I miss the S868 days...

S868?
lol
I am unfamiliar with this model#

I take it from context it is an extremely deprecated model!

touch screen input phone: that Motocrappa
the A890 or somefin (I hate moto, dont ask me to remember their bloody model#s!! I only know which one the V66 is and I think that is more than enuff!!!)
also Nokia has the 7700 lined up..

if u want to consider touch screen input as a smart phone, then yeh, only phones with Symbian OS 7 can be considered
not Series60
(I always considered Series60 as just phones with a monkey load of features!)

well, if you were to omit the touchscreen requirement then according to the above definition the t610, t630, z600 and possibly even the t310 could be considered "smartphones"

I think smartphones are the businnes phones equipted with lots of features and compatibility with other devices and the ones which include posibility to add extra memory (via mmc, stick duo). And, of course, that have pda functions This message was posted from a R520
