Actually superstrings are vibrations of energy which exist within the smallest possible dimensions of space. Known as the Planck length; 1.616*10-35 metres. The smallest piece of matter in existance. Infinite in time, not space.

With regard to the lifespan of a touchscreen... am I not right in saying that it is measured in the number of "touches" to a certain place, as opposed to a certain number of years...

And the number of "touches" required is generally in the multiple of millions... So i think it is probably safe to assume that the stylus will wear out before the screen !:-)

@ switchbitch: that's true, but only if it's an open string. closed strings are, by definition, infinite because they have no beginning and no end. of course they also occupy up to 26 dimensions so length is a relative term.

If you have the inclination, or have indeed lost the will to live, and decide to test out the screen, just remember that you may be able to make a claim for RSA!

Or perhaps your arm will just fall off, who knows !

The screen has an overlaying polymer film just above the surface, (you can see it move if you get a good angle of reflection) this membrane will have a certain rate of decay when exposed to UV rays (from the Sun) like most biodegradable materials it will have an "Exposure" life, so like rubber car tyres, plastic bags, car paint ETC the rate at which it breaks down depends heavily on exposure to UV.

Keep the phone in a cupboard & it will be in existance for longer, make sure the cupboard is large enough for you to get in to make phone calls & send sms messages, or if this becomes ridiculously inconvenient, consider just keeping it indoors with all the lights swiched off, remember to make a mental note of the possition of furniture & large items with sharp corners. as turning up at a SE service center for firmware upgrade with serious abrasions to the face & body will be a dead givaway, telling them you "Fell down the stairs" wont cut it with them if it's plain obvious you trod on the phone in the dark.

May I suggest that if you go to that extreme, maybe you should consider some form of indestructable/watertight/shockproof/heat resistant covering for the phone... although this may cost more than a replacement if it has to be custom made!

Perhaps you should also just go out at night (vampire stylee), to protect the vulnerable screen from the evil sun and his harmful UV rays... not that we see much of it anyway, so that worry is somewhat reduced...

On a more positive note, perhaps a screen protector would be a good idea... most of these claim not only to, surprise surprise, protect the screen from scratches, but they are also resistant to UV... Maybe that could help the overly anxious amongst us...

Closed superstrings are still smaller than a piece of string stop being silly. Unless it spans several dimensions in which case it may exist in various locations throughout the 3 dimensional universe rendering the argument null and void. a piece of string can only be as long as the space it occupies....
the beauty of wave-particle physics is that you can disagree with everyone and still be right.
