Look (Google) for "Agile Messenger". It supports MSN, AIM, Yahoo and ICQ, and it's free.

Since I work for a GSM operator, I think I should cast some light on the issue.
When using 12Planet or Agile Messenger or any other messenger product, you must connect your phone to the Intenret via GPRS for example.
When using GPRS you pay for the amount of data you download and upload. The duration of the connection does not matter, you only pay for the data amount downloaded. Then the question is how much do you pay? I would start by checking my operators pricing on GPRS.
And to clarify the difference between GPRS and WAP, GPRS is a technology for data transfer. WAP is a standard for a certain version of webpages that are designed specifically for mobile phones.
And the connection between those two? You can use GPRS to transfer WAP pages to your phone. This is a little bit like using ADSL to fetch HTML pages on the Internet.
I hope this clarifies some things.

so say i spent 10 quid on having gprs a month, then i would be able to use the messanger for as long as i like and i would not have to pay more than the mothly gprs fee?

You would be able to use Messenger for as long as you like, provided that the total amount of data you transfer does not exceed the bundle included in your £10 data tariff.
For example, O2 (UK) offer a bundle with 5MB of data for £8 a month. With this bundle you could stay connected to the network 24 hours a day, as long as your total data use didn't go over 5MB for the month. If it did, you would then be charged (in this case, £1 per megabyte) for the extra use.
With GPRS the amount of time is absolutely irrelevant; all that matters is how many bytes you transfer.

I use Agilemessenger and it only transfers a very small amount of data, not sure exactly how much as I surf and check email as well, but I would GUESS that it is about 1KB per 5 lines or so of text.
If you want a scientific response
1 Character = 1 bit
8 bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 Kilo Byte
So the answer would be 1Kb = 1024*8 characters.
However that is unlilely to be true as it has to have a protacle to send the data and error checking and other stuff, so I doubt the abouve calculation will be much of an indication
