T9 every time - it's way quicker than stylus for me.
Firstly, having to open the flip, remove the stylus, open the app, etc. etc. Then, put back the stylus and close the flip.
I've have banged out two SMS messages using T9 in that time!
Admittedly, if I was doing something else with the flip open and the stylus in my hand I'd continue to use the stylus for an SMS. However, when I pull the phone out of my pocket to reply to an SMS or create a new one then T9 is considerably faster. (Does help to add your words to the dictionary though).

I go with stylus on P900 (flip opened) and virtual keyboard without T9 (flip closed).
