Yeah I totally agree regarding 3G.
Their handsets, even the new Nokia are a waste of time with short battery life & a fiddly menu system. The network is patchy to say the least & video downloads are too pricy (MTV newsflash for 50p).
I've a Motorola A835 on trial from Carphonewarehouse & it's nasty.
Okay 500 minutes anytime for £12.50, but after half an hour of voice calls your batteries flogged out, I've not had the opportunity to try Video calling since I don't know anyone else with a network 3 phone.
The browser is limited to 3's own services which are rather depressing, and the screen is worse than my P900 with washed out colours & low definition.
Give me my old P800/900 anyday. Touch screen, full web access & upgradability!
3... It's not 4 me!

@Superluminova - I have a copy of the program if you wish me to send it to you via email. If you don't want to register etc just to get the theme creator.

I think that people bashing 3G is a bit narrow-minded. It'll take a couple of years but 3G will be the next big thing. It took a few years before the GSM networks started taking off. Bashing 3G right now is really short-sighted.
Also you haven't seen the kind of services that will be available with 3G networks and the kind of stuff that will be possible using 3G.

What are these wonderful things 3G has to offer though? Don't get me wrong I have never tried one of 3's phones or seen one in action. But apart from video calls what other things can they do? I'm sure I'm not alone here but I don't particularly want everyone to see my face every time I make a call. Plus that I don't want to carry one of those bricks around. Ok like you say the size of these phones may change as new releases come out. The z1010 for example but still I have my doubts if 3 and 3G will ever take off. Around my area and the people I know only a FEW have phones capable of MMS, those who have it like myself would never use it because of the rip off prices and for the simple reason it is much cheaper to use Bluetooth to send pictures to one another and to the pc. Thus for this reason I have my doubts if MMS will ever become as widespread as sms has become. My point being if MMS can't become widespread then what chance has video messaging got of becoming widespread with NORMAL people. I can see the advantages for businesses but not the ordinary person who just wants to send the odd text or make a call.
But like I said what are the 'kind of services that will be available with 3G networks' ppcrockar? If they are something interesting then I'll shut up, but I aren't narrow-minded and I aren't just bashing 3G. I'm just stating that I don't think it does or will ever appeal to the mass majority. Its features now such as video clips and weather reports, I really don't see this ever appealing to many because they are widely available on the internet and with broadband becoming ever so popular speed issues on computers is becoming less and less of a problem. I think what operators should do personally is start to improve MMS and make that more attractive to customers at a cheaper price before trying to sell the 3G network.
Unfortunately I have to say I can't see the Z1010 being a success, I'd be happy if SE were to prove me wrong but if it is only on 3 (in the UK) as I have heard from somewhere, I can't see many people buying it.

Well.... since 3G has only taken a few small steps yet and aren't available at a large scale yet, it's hard to predict services that will be offered. Think of stuff like positioning services, with maps where you can see where you are, find streets, restaurants, friends, a specific address etc. "GPS-like" services that can inform you of traffic jams and reroute you to better routes.
Instead of listening to music with your cd/mp3-player you could listen to streaming music directly from the 3G networks, and if you want to you can watch the video as well, with no need to transfer it to your device at home. Just choose the songs you want to listen to from a huge online database. Watching the World Cup final of soccer when you don't have access to your TV, and you're on the move.
Video-telephony, I think will not be used that much, but video-messaging has huge potential where you can send MMS with video-clips to your friends etc.
I know that people say that they just want to use their phones for talking and maybe sending a few sms's now and then. But when mobile phones started to appear many people said that they wouldn't need one... and here we are today with almost everyone owning a mobile phone that they use daily. The same scenario applied to the internet. Many people didn't see any use of the internet. But today it's a central part of almost every persons lives. Services that wasn't even thought of when the internet technology started to appear are today used daily by a lot of people.
You have to think of the 3G networks as the techology base that has the possiblity to enable new never thought of services, not as a service on it's own. Many people just says that they'll have no need for 3G since video messaging is nothing they would use. But 3G is and will be soo much more than this.
One last thing that people forget is that since the 3G networks are so much more powerful (talking about data capacity), you can have more calls/services without it taking up as much resources as with GSM, which will eventually lead to lower talk prices than GSM can ever provide. And of course this also applies to stuff like MMS-messages that will be much cheaper than it's today. Also you can have better voice quality than what GSM can offer.
Yet another thing. The 3G phones will be the same size as the GSM phones are today in just about 1 years time. Think of the first GSM phones that came in the early years of GSM, and see how much has happened since then, the same will happen to 3G phones. It's not like the technoolgy would just stop evolving.
Of course I'm an engineer so my opinions might be a little biased

@ppcrockar - The thing is though, some of those thigns you said about traffic jam alerts. You could already do that with a T610, or a z600 using sms, or gprs or the special numbers for traffic alerts etc which some operators have. I hear what your saying about the amount of data which can be sent over 3g networks but once again, what about hscd or (hcsd I can never remeber that one lol) isn't that sort of the broadband of mobile phones? correct me if I'm wrong because I don't know much about it. But if so why not use that to send lots of data instead of 3G. I'm not saying like 3G is useless and doesn't have any uses but what I am saying is I don't think we give the mobile phones and the networks we use now enough credit as we can do alot of these things which are on this 3G network.
