Vodafone K.K. announced that starting in April, it will be shipping the Sharp V801SH. It’s a new 3G handset made specially for the Vodafone network. It’s aimed for use both in Japan and abroad. In my opinion, when you go over to jap, buy a phone and sim there, that means that you might save yourself a bit of money. Also, it means that you will have a decicated phone to use in Japan!

Er...no they don't. The extra band is for the South American market as far as i was aware.
Japan doesnt use GSM.

Get Nokia 7600 (W-CDMA/GSM dual mode) SIM-free. You can roam on Vodafone Japan's 3G network (W-CDMA). Nokia Japan will start selling it in Nokia shop at Narita Airport (and other selected shops) soon (date not confirmed).
