Yep, we have the same rights. Don't I have a right to go out for an evening and not come home smelling like an ashtray?

I disagree that smokers should have the same rights as non smokers.
It is proven beyond any doubt that smoking has many health risks and in cigarette smoke there are over 4000 chemicals of which at least 40 are carcinogenic. Passive smoking is also a proved negative health factor and there are many many law suits going on around the world regarding this. Indeed many public places ban smoking as much for health and safety of their workers as they do for the preferences of their guests.
this is an extreme example but it shows a good point... I am not allowed to take dangerous chemicals into public places etc. the only difference with smoking is that its impact is a much slower process and so people tend to care a little less about it
also governments are slow to react because they get alot of taxes from cigarettes, but on the other hand it also costs alot of money on the health system, and don't even get me started on my thoughts on people who bring illness upon themselves from lifestyle choices having to pay their full health costs themselves!

I like smoking. Its my life, my health, my risk. Would never make alcohol forbidden, just because i never drink.

You're free to smoke, and I have the right not to have to breathe the fumes. I also have the right to a social life. Perhaps smokers should stay at home? ;-)

I'm a smoker, but I agree totally that smokers should not force others to inhale their smoke against their will. I would never dream of lighting up in a no smoking zone or, especially, around children and I am very considerate around non-smokers, even in areas where smoking is allowed.
The only thing I hate is the way that some non-smokers take their anti-smoking views to extremes, and literally treat ALL smokers like they are the scum of the Earth. This is simply not fair, because not all smokers are inconsiderate. I was once chastised by a particularly opinionated non-smoker for smoking OUTSIDE of a take-away restaurant, claiming that I was inflicting my smoke on people entering and leaving the building! I wouldn't have minded, except I was stood about 5 meters away from the door, and the wind was blowing in the opposite direction!
Have you ever noticed how the worst anti-smokers are usually ex-smokers themselves

You say that the smokeing do cost the health system that much. I have to dissagree with you there since there was a test on the tv one day that figured out that smokers do have shorter life and it does make sence that a guy that is dying because of cancer when he is 50 years is costing the society less then a guy that is dying when he is 90 years. Just think about it.
The thing you are saying about that smokers should pay for their own health care when they get sick is not very human. Think about if everyone that goes on drug/alcohol and the fat people dont get any help because it is their own fault that they are sick. It is just sick as the word sick itself.
I agree with you guyz that people should not get bad smell or risk their health because of other people's smoking but the thing is that i as a big smoker that have smoked since i was thirteen dont like to go out on the town and take a beer and have to go outside every five minutes. Oh yez i am smokiang that much when i am drinking but if i have to go outside every time i have to smoke and then wait up to 1 hour to get inside i rather stay at a private party or something like that.
I think that non smoking bars will be empty bars because i will stop go out if they make smoking forbiden and i think there is alot of people that agree with me in that and when lots of the smokers rather stay at home instead of going out the non smokers will also stop to go out because there will not be any fun to go on a place that is only half full.
I think there will be alot of trubles when a drunk smoker want to take a smoke and the security guards tell him to go out.
but on the other side i have to agree with the non smokers in that some places it should be ilegal to smoke. I think they should make it ilegal to smoke on places where kids is alowed to come inside because i dont like the thoughts about that smokers is making the kids feel uncomfortable. Then again forexample the pizzaplaces will maybe try to make it 16year to come inside so they can have smokers so it is not so easy to decide.
