Do not need to buy a branded Notebook coz most of the manufacturers purchase the component from the same source, mainly China. I think they are all OK as long as the Notebook vendor provide good software supoorts.
I bought a Generic notebook and I have had my Bios upgraded 8 times, Graphics drivers upgrade 3 times. absolutely no problems at all. Unlike my collegues who use Compaq,HP,Dell, Toshiba etc,, It seems crashes is a built-in feature

Well. I've had a ThinkPad (IBM) for abt 3 years now...
The mother board died after a couple of weeks. The screen had to be changed a couple of months ago. Though, everything was under guarantee, and taken in charge by IBM
The battery life is ridiculous, and it's the 2nd battery I've got. Well, it lasts some 45 minutes without using anything fancy like CD or games or the like...

So I wouldn't recommend IBM. Though, the customer service works fine, and their laptops are really solid (meaning the plastic case etc), and I like the keyboard feel.
One thing: I hate the trackpoint (this little red thing in the middle of the keyboard). It's very easy to use and well placed, but the feeling is really not pleasant, for me at least

You could consider Laptops from Apple. They have a huge battery life (e.g. you can watch a full DVD). The battery lasts 5 hours.

I would suggest the asus b1000 series...
It is a really cool notebook... it has all the features you need with your t68...

Spec.
800>1000 mhz pentium III/celleron 700>850+ mhz
up to 512 mb ram (standard 256)
up to 30 gb hardisk (standard 20)
15" screen... supports display modes > 1600x1200
wireless lan
bluetooth
irda
fingerprint security
(cool design) not important, but nice anyway

The best laptop for me is the Dell Inspiron 8200 or the sony GRX with 16.1 inch screen!
With the dell you can find feuteres as NVDIA Geforce 4 and more!

I got a Advent (sold by PCWorld but make in USA i think) laptop.. and its cool.

PIII 800, 128mb RAM, DVD, 10g HDD, Ir port, LAN connection, Modem, 14.1" screen, floppy etc etc.

Dont know what other brands to recommend, but it depends on your budget and what kinda spec you require - and also what work you will be doing on it.

Im using a Compaq Armada M700 pIII 650, 256Mb, 6Gb, 14".
Before I "fell in love with it" I often thought never a Compaq
But its oki, its a bit sad it can manage higher res. then 1024x768.
And upgrading it is extremely expensive

But I would have closer look at Dell, seems to have som build problems (does they co-operate with Ericsson and Microsoft ) - they might became to big - to fast!?
But they are rather "cheap" and good upgrade opportunities..

Just recieved a VM MMS... Like the MMS service already
