i am sure that in the phone market good designs and good features are not mutually exclusive. Cars are different bigger and more exspensive to re design. SE can easily make stunning phones if they just stop re designing old phones.

but they have to continue a popular line, they have experiented with keys - and -, and yes and no, they have choosen the softkeys, they have choosen that they will use a joystick, they have choosen to have big screen, and to have a camera
if you put this things together in a candybar version you can say that se is again copying!
i just don't know what else can they change!
and i certainly don't want some crazy design like 3650, 7700, 3510i, mc60...
even at cars, when a company decides which look best suits the company name they stick with it!
like the new volvos, bmws, mercedes etc etc
they all have a distinguished look and you immediately know: wow that's a bmw or audi!
se has finally found themselves, their look is conservative, high quality materials, grey silver colours and two front (camera-mobile)
i think se is finally becoming a steady popular company....
and to top it all: i still believe that se didn't cancelled the t*** line, i think k*** phones are for the gap between the business t6** series and low end t3** series, just like nokia did with 3650.....
and i for one think the design proves it, it's more youth orientated with new materials like rubber, and with camera possibilites standing out, and not to mention the new features like 3d gaming, radio, mp3 ringtones etc.
all this things weren't very outstanding in t6***, java games sucked, it was clear that t6** was built for business man, but it has became very popular so they have decided to realease a very similar phone but with more advanced features in terms of fun, the k series were born...
at least that's the way i see it, i may be completely wrong....

Why all the 'pointing the fingers' towards nokia mobiles as well (i get that this is mainly based around SE mobiles but hey! ). I do agree that the latest SE mobiles look the same, but they do all have unique features specific to that model... which is what Nokia do as well.

Take the Nokia 7250 and the 7250i. The 7250 HASN'T got all the new features that the newer Nokia 7250i has, like:
x-HTML, image calller ID, night mode feature in camera, advanced MMS features (devlivery reports for MMS etc), HSCSD (High speed circuit switched data). The 7250 hasn't got any of these new features.

And if you're argument is mainly based around the fact the all mobile manufacturers do is change the look but keep the same features, i dunt think thats 100% correct.

Alot of peeps ave sed the Nokia 3200 is just the Nokia 7250/7250i but in a different shell. That's right too, but they haven't taken the features into account. The Nokia 3200 has all the features the Nokia 7250i has (that the 7250 doesn't have) and the 3200 has even more features both the 7250/7250i don't have.

For example, the Nokia 3200 has all the features the 7250i has including these new features the 7250i doesn't include:

Picture editor (to crop, add image frame, clip art and text to images), Automatic volume control, unique cut-out covers, 16-chord polyphonic sounds (7250/i only has 4!), ability to send media VIA Infra-red to other nokia mobiles, EDGE/(E)GPRS (brings data transfer on a GSM network enabling '3G' like services like video streaming capability), bright LED flashlight, option to add several slides to one MMS message (put more than one sound and picture to an MMS), J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition made especially for mobile technology), supports AMR sounds (using Nokia PC Suite 5.64 convert WAV sounds to AMR format and upload to fone to use as ringtone), voice recorder, menu layout options (either show icons in list or grid (grid similar to that of SE menu layouts).

I was able to write in one whole paragraph the features the 7250i doesnt have, there are a huge amount of new features that the 3200 holds and that other nokia's dont, and the best thing is the 3200 is cheaper than the 7250i by far.

In my opinion, i think Sony Ericsson are doing the same thing as Nokia, but it's not negative, so long as they aren't just changing the look and putting the phone at a different price. If they are changing the techonlogy inside the mobile its all good ! And sometimes it's all the small things (which aren't included in the specifications about the mobile on the manufacturer's website) that make a big difference.

Well nokia release new mobiles take the 7250 and 7250i. They officially release these phones. Sonyericsson can do this with a fw upgrade. No fuss. Nokia just goes ott with everythin. This message was posted from a T610

Some new technology features can't simply be firmware upgraded. Like Night Mode on the camera or HSCSD.

Plus if it were possible to do Firmware upgrade, why not just make one Nokia mobile phone and add upgrades?? The reason why this isnt possible (same goes with Sony Ericsson) is that most of the new features are impossible to add simply by doing software upgrades. Plus, the manufactueres wouldn't be making money, and it they're not making any money they'll end up going down hill! Every manufacturer is out for their customers best interest but they do have to think for themselves sometimes...

Should we perhaps start a thread on 'Nokia. where is the magic?' as well then?

As for ... even though they may use one basis for the design more than opne phone model....... why is that a bad thing?

The newly announced phones all come with heaps of features that ppl have been asking for, they come in a classy looking case...... what more do you want?

In any case... imho there is only so much you can do design-wise with rectangular shape of a few mm thick, of which more than 50% of the front consists of screen

And remember, ;se: produces phones not high tech jewelry

Try and be content for once

but we are not talking about features but design!

se is know to have tactics: new phone->small hw and fw upgrade+design-> new phone-> etc.
example: t610->t630->t6** (or k700 or oh9)
t300->t310->t3**
p800->p900->p100 (linea3)
etc.
anyway night mode is easily done by fw (example p800 r1d-r2f)
a lot of nokias are mainly the same phone, there's nothing wrong with that, but you can't say it isn't true.....

anyway we are talking about design here as far as i know.....

edit: @and i agree with vlamm....

ok no need to be offensive here...
my opinion is that se has one of the best designes and i think this design i quite different form t610.....
and also i think every company has to have a "brand name design"
for instance look at audi models (a3, a4, a8), you can't say that their design is not new, it's the company itself and how it presents itself to the world, but on the other side you have firms like hyundai, now that really is a new desing every time, (for instance you can never guess which car succeded which)
i hope se will not change in this way, but hey i don't care if anybody else has a different opinion.....
btw: i think k700 is one of the best designed and feature packed phones ever built......
though t610 is still number one in those terms...
