Yeah I think there's a register in the li-ion nanny chip in the batt... perhaps part of the "infolithium" system... I wonder if it can be reset...
This is probably a good way to check if a batt you buy is really brandnew!
Hey can anyone check if the counter is different when using two different batts on the same phone?

The counter is in the battery circuitry. But a lithium-ion/polymer battery will age and die in time(~ 3 years) even if it did not go through a lot of charge/discharge cycles, i.e. even if charge counter is very low. You shouldn't base your purchase decision on the counter of a used battery.
