i agree with orangeman, using a t610 and wml i could post using the phones smilies and see non animated ones posted by others

If I recall correctly, older
phones was not able to display the animation of an image. This applies to images included in a WAP page.

they have probably just inserted them as images rather than using a smiley code
e.g.
if you click on the "Edit Post" you can see the BB code.
