it only has to be 'headset accepts' to comply. The ericsson units act as this only when attached to 6310i. if you press to talk the phone always asks you if you want to connect rather than just doing it like the t68. a tad annoying i find

True,
tried T68i and 6310i with HBH-20. Sound quality and range are much better with 6310i. About phone sounds in the headset, I just turned off auto answer on 6310i. Don't need it because of answer button on headset.
No voice dialling through the phone button on the HBH-20

. Well, can live with that.
((Had T68i for a while and connected with bluetooth looked too much like a circus to me with green and blue light (probably a bad place to say this.... understand that it is a beautiful piece of equipment with more functions than Nokia. Had too much trouble connecting T68 to Palm and Laptop. Took only 30 min with 6310i probably bad luck with T68i)

I just tested the 6310i and bluetooth capability. And it isnt really impressive. Nokia still have some problems in the way their bluetooth works.
First I tried it with HBH-10,...it works the first time,..but when turning either phone or headset off,..after this the headset cannot be found by phone.
I solved this by giving the bluetooth headset another PASSKEY (normal is 0000,..tried to call it 1234).
This was done by pairing the headset with an Ericsson phone, as I could not retrieve passkey at all from the Nokia phone.
After this it works,..the problem is, that every time you turn the headset or phone off,..you have to go into the bluetooth-menu in the phone, and re-establish contact to headset.
The whole idea of the bluetooth headset, is that you do not have to have your phone within range,..hmmmm
This is due to the way Nokia have built their bluetooth part,..NOT very smart.
What the e.g. 6310/i also lacks is the "Automatic" mode,..the Nokia only features bluetooth-modes ON or OFF.
So either you use a lot of battery,..or you can't use bluetooth,..hmmm, again not very smart.
I tried out Bluespoon, HBH-15 and HBH-10,..all works the same way.
The reason why you have to change the PASSKEY-code is, that Nokia phones see passkey 0000 as default,..and therefore do not make a "real" pairing. Thats the reason why the phone cant "see" the headset after the headset have been turned off and ON again.
When I tried the headsets using default-passkey 0000, the Nokia 6310i didnt ask for a passkey.
BUT when I changed the passkey of the headsets to e.g. 1234,..THEN the phone asked for it,..meaning it established a partnership.
So yes, you can change the passkey-code of the headset,...but you need a phone that can actually do this,..e.g. an Ericsson model.
And yes,..you can use e.g. an Ericsson headset with the Nokia, BUT you still need to re-activate it every time it has been turned off and on
This is by no means satisfying,...its kinda tricky,...and not very easy.
I wish Nokia could work the same way/functionality as the Ericsson/SE-model phones,..its much easier,..and you dont need to go into the bluetooth-menu everytime the phone or headset have been turned off.
AND you have the mode called "automatic" which doesnt drain the battery !
The 6310i although is a nice phone,..but the need to work on the functionality of bluetooth,...not just on this model.

Jan,
Thanks for the explanation. It is always good to know which part of the system is being primitive (in this case the Nokia it seems). Can this be taken care of through a software update you think?
I think the situation with the HBH-20 is not as bad as with the others. Maybe I have misunderstood you and what I am doing is what you describe. I have used the passkey 0000 the first time and now have to only reestablish the connection after fallout or turning off. (menu 11, 4, select, hbh-20, activate BT conn.) A little bit like putting in my old wired headset. I remember with the T68i during normal use after turning on the headset it said: found HBH-20, pair? If I would be able to change the passkey (my sister has T68 still) would the phone recognise the headset when I turn it on?
Why is no phone perfect? Because don't tell me the T68i is. I have tried it. 6310i also seems not..... sigh.

You're welcome
Yes,..in this case its the Nokia-system being "primitive". They tried to make it as easy as possible,..but instead ended up with something else, thats much harder.
As You probably know,..I also work with "bluetooth-people" on the Bluespoon,..and we've been looking into the way the 6310i works, and how Nokia have built their system,...I dont really know for sure, if an "update" would do the trick here.
I'm not quite sure about HBH-20,..only tried it out for a very short while,..so this might be a bit different than HBH-10 and 15. HBH-20 might work easier with the Nokia.
The good thing about the Ericsson/Sonyericsson phones are, that you dont have to re-establish contact, after its been broken off.
This is done automatically. Once you switch headset ON,..the phone "see" it.
Sonyericsson/Ericsson phones dont ask for passkeys whenever headset is turned off and on. Once You paired headset and phone, then contact is established/re-established without touching anything.
This is the right way to use bluetooth
This feature is not on the Nokia phones,..and you have to re-establish contact each time the headset or phone is turned off.
Nokia really needs to improve their bluetooth-functionality,..its not good enough,..way to difficult.
I use the T68i and HBH-20,..it never asks for passkey, when I turn it on. I use default passkey 0000.
It will only ask for passkey, if the phone and headset have not been paired correctly.
About the Nokia 6310i and HBH-20. Well, You could change the passkey to e.g. 3333 instead of 0000.
But You would STILL have to "activate" bluetooth headset in the bluetooth menu in the Nokia. The Nokia phone will not reconize the headset by itself,..so it will not help you much
It seems to work the way it can at the moment, so You might as well leave it at that
I was also looking at the 7650,..well, untill I found out, that it doesnt have bluetooth headset profile ! Hmmmm, big mistake !
It can only be used for data-transfer, e.g. connection to internet, synchronization and so on,...BUT no "bluetooth-talking" here
Too bad really,..I did find 7650 quite interesting.
I'm still hoping that Nokia might put the headset-profile into the 7650, before its released,..but I dont really think so
--------------------------
Well, no phone is completely "perfect", they always miss something, thats why we keep getting new ones,..and they keep producing new ones as well
And no, the T68i is not perfect either,..but its in the better part of whats possible to do, and what will work.
T68 has come a long way I think,..a lot of new things that actually work,..and I know the "next version" of it, will be even better
I'm quite sure too, that Nokia will "get the grip" on Bluetooth.
And the next version of 63xx (64xx) will surely be even better !
The bad thing about these high-tech phones, is that the more high-tech it gets,..the bigger the chance is, that something will not work properly. We'll just have to live with that

Interesting stuff...
Well it's great to hear these things from someone so close to the heat. I am lucky my mom might buy my 6310i so I can think of the t68i again. You use the same (t68i and HBH-20) combination I used for a few days. I found the sound quality was too poor for provfessional use. It seems the HBH-20 amplified all noise on the line (long distance was worse than national). How is your batery experience on t68i?
Now with Nokia 6310i I can tell you the battery of the HBH-20 gives me 6 hours stand by with 1 hour talk time. I understand this is because of the bluetooth functionallity of Nokia, it probably sucks the battery dry.... It should be fine with t68i. I have to say the sound quality is really great though. How is your sound with HBH-20 T68i combination? What about battery life?
I do not have to give the passkey more than once on the 6310i. Only reestablish bluetooth connection. When will the Bluespoon come out? Any idea of the price? I would love to continue to use my HBH-20 for the time being.

There will be a smaller number of Bluespoons avaiable in June,..and the big release/numbers in July.
Prices (and ordering) can be seen on
http://www.expansys.com
These are the introductional-prices,..which will eventually drop later this year,..as it usually does with these products
6310i (Nokia's bluetooth function) ,...yes the Nokia lacks the mode called "automatic" (automatic-mode doesnt use battery at all).
So when using the Nokia with bluetooth ON,..it will drain the battery more unfortunately
Battery-times on mobile-phones are pretty difficult to measure,..as it also depends a lot on "signal",..how good or bad is the area You're in.
And of course one uses the phone very differently from day to day,..no days are really alike
My T68i battery-times are very different from day to day,..as I sometimes move a lot around,..uses bluetooth (also in ON-mode when using my laptop with bluetooth-card),..and using headsets some days.
I mainly use the HBH-20 on "automatic" on the T68i,..so the battery is the same as if i didnt have bluetooth turned on.
When I use the bluetooth mode "ON",..I still think the battery-times are quite good on the T68i. It doesnt feel like it drains the phone completely.
The sound I think is quite good in HBH-20 and T68i combination.
I havent tried to call a number outside Denmark,..so I dont know about "real long-distance" calls. But for everyday use I think the HBH-20 is quite good. Its surely better than my upgraded HBH-10.
The sound in the HBH-20 is a little deep/coarse,..suits me fine,..as my hearing-ability is very good
I dont like headsets with high-pitch sounds/voices, hehe.
And I dont like high-pitch ringtones neither,..my hearing is too good
The good thing about SE/Ericsson phones' bluetooth-functionality, is of course that you never have to re-establish contact,....its just there, whenever you turn the headset on

Nice,..this is the way bluetooth have to work
