I quite agree with @axxxr's 1st post! But I guess that laptops will go first before the extinction of Desktops. Laptops are far expensive, and it is but very ideal to have Desktops in every home and office rather than laptops. NEC will be releasing the very first mobile fone with tv features on it, as reported, it will be released next year. As long as mobile fones has a large capacity of 'memory', it is not far from expected that it can also play DVD's in the very distant future, or even PS2 games or it's equivalent. I guess after the tv hype on mobile fones, the next move will be for us to get to watch tv programs which are transmitted via satellite, like, CNN BBC and HBO - though of course, will be very expensive when hooked up!
Everything is just possible with all the technology now mates! Who would just ever thought that 'beepers' will go with the extinction of the dinosaurs

anyway mobile phones will never take over pc's
mobile phones are a MOBILE solution
while pc is an ultimate power FIXED LOCATION thingy
lol
plus how are you going to get x800 gc a 5.1 speaker set a dvd burner a 19 inch monitor a 3400 mhz processor etc etc from a mobile phone that has a BATTERY!

PC's are mostly used to run software applications. Word processors, spreadsheets, graphic programs etc.
A phone to call ppl, messaging and as a PDA. Different uses, so I do not see how the Smart phone could make the PC obsolete, because nobody want to design web pages on a phone for example, Nor does a phone have a full size keyboard to type 60wpm
This is the same hype as the "Paperless office". We are making more paper these days than ever before.
Get real!!!
I would rather say, that smart phones chip away on laptops.

Let us not forget that Nokia has already made it's Communicator series, looks more like a mini-laptop, with say, half of it's features! With the very near assumption of it's 9500 series, I guess, it has already captured half of the laptop's capabilities of doing, it has already a built-in cam!

OK! Well for the meantime . . . as we await for the inventors sketching their plans in blueprints, this image will just fit how they look doing their everyday lives - in the office . . .

We need some tech breakthru to get rid of PC. I like mine. 19'' screen and a very comfortable mouse&keyboard. That's impossible on mobile devices anyway.
