@ b-chill
Yes, the phones can be reprogrammed (i.e. changing the phone number, etc.) but not everyone can do it simply because programming requires a lock code, which is detained by the operator. Of course, as we all know, similarly with GSM SIM-locks, if you know the right people (some might call it the "wrong" people lol), anything is possible.

not sure, think its enough to change sg in the sw or fw in case u want/need another handset. but its a good question. do hope our canadian expert can help us.
lol @ Canadian expert!
Actually, after one year and 10 months of working for Orange, I moved back to Canada the none of the Canadian GSM operators wanted to hire me lol So I don't think I'm an expert anymore with all the updates in GSM technology since February 2003. So yeah, I can't accept the title of Canadian Expert

@ boba
As I mentionned, I really dislike anything that has to do with CDMA, and although my previous employer was a cell phone operator that used CDMA, i never bothered getting one. I love my P800, I want a P900, and none of the phones they had could give me the functions that these handsets offered...you want an idea of what you can get from CDMA operators? Check out these links, you'll see what CDMA has to offer...A LOT of clamshells (or flips as they call them here)...these are very popular because they are trendy and "cool"...Just to give you an idea of how behind north america is when it comes to mobile phones, Motorola up until recently had a huge part of the market. I've always thought Motorola sucked, but they sell a lot of flips lol anyways, browse these links, should answer your questions...

@bacanito thx. Yes, its really weird that the us market likes such technology, but i think their system is build well and must work perfect, otherwise they would change it. I am really interested the marketshare of cdma and other technologies in the us. Any infos about it?

@boba
Not sure about what you mean by marketshare, but if you mean which part of the market belongs to CDMA and GSM, i would say approximately 70%-30% respectively here in Canada...hopefully the tables will turn in the future

bacanito,
good job but since your really new in Canada the oldest cellular technology actually was TDMA which is what Rogers AT&T Wireless used. Now since April (officially November 2001) have launched GSM/GPRS and their coverage especially with upgraded towers to 850Mhz to improve voice quality and RANGE of GPRS is significantly larger than Fido's - Montréal & my personal favorite. Now their called Rogers Wireless and if you want better coverage you should check them out. Their Nationally competitive with signal range just like the other Big2 TelusMobility (whom bought out Clearnet - of which their Mike Net network actually does use SIM cards but NOT for GSM/GPRS just for settings of the network; really strange) & Bell Mobility.
However Roger Wireless is long overdue to launch EDGE over GPRS this summer so look for that as well (their testing in Vancouver). Don't get me wrong your good kid pretty good kid but with respect to CDMA at least in Canada is as old as Rogers' TDMA it just seems more popular because you have 2 cellular companies of the 4 (yes four not including the resellers) that market CDMA2000 1xRTT and 1 gorrilla that markets GSM/GPRS - Fido is the underdog (pun intended) but is coming up strong which I'd be happy with if they would take my hard earned cash for FullControl.
USIM's are what they have in Japan due to W-CDMA and the compatibility with CDMA & GPRS terminals.
W-CDMA or UTMS is were ALL cellular providers in North America will eventually end up.
PS try to tell which provider someone is on if their using a P800, Nokia 8390, Motorola V60 or V66 when their using it in Canada and did have it purchased subsidized here while their on the phone and you cannot see the branding. Guess what you can't because Fido & Rogers sold all those phones with the same faceplate options at nearly the same time - 3 years for teh Motos & Nokia that I mentioned.
