@jim: you're the man! AMD and MSI rules... My suggestion: MSI KV8 motherboard, AMD Athlon 3000XP+ boxed and ATi Radeon 9800 Pro

All comes down to likes and preferences really:
At home I use a gigabyte NF2 (N400Pro2 I think board)
AMD XP 2500 (Oc'd to hell and back)
1 GB kingston
Chaintech GeForce Ti4200
Solid gaming machine, though admitedly farcry shows it to its knees.
Personally I'm an AMD/Nvidia fan. (So any combination you make there = win

) but no matter which way you go AMD/Nvidia, AMD/Ati, Intel/Nvidia, Intel/Ati you'll find at least 4-5 stat pages that tells you each one is king.
You'll also get lots of cheats in their drivers. Fact is both did/are/have/will again no doubt so they cancel out.
If you want price:power, then Amd is a good solution. if money isn't an object and brand names are good, Intel isn't a bad choice either.

at home I have : ABit NF7-series motherboard, 512mb Corsair PC3200ram and an AMD Athlon 2400XP+ currently running at 2,5 ghz (2,0ghz orginally) I love AMD because they're cheap, fast and reliable

Not much point in you getting an nforce Mother board if your gonna put a ATI graphics card in it?!
My advice, keep it AMD(best for games) Intel are over priced. An asus MOther is prob a good call and to be honest there is little in it between a radeon and Geforce. If your building your PC for HL2 tho then stick with ATI.
I have a Shuttle case with an nforce 2 ultra, 512mb ram and a geforce 5700 ultra. Doom 3 here we come!!

Yeah, asus is the best mboard 4 u.but i advise you to spend a little more money and go 4 a barton 3000+ with 400fsb and 512 kb l2.because it has great overclocking potential.and its multiplier is one of the lowest,10.5x ,so that you can easily make it a 3200+ with mild overclocking.and 2700+ has a not so good thorton core with only 256kb l2 ,2800+ has a lower fsb ,333mhz clock,so more Bottlenecks than 3000+
if u consider a intel go 4 a p4 3.0e which has 800fsb ,so less bottlenecks with a asus motherboard.
