A sperm count survey for a study on the male reproductive system has been called off in India because of poor response from people, researchers said on Wednesday.
"The "perspective study" to understand the effects of lifestyle on the reproductive system had become important after casual surveys showed that sperm count in men living in urban areas was on the decline.
Earlier isolated studies had been carried out into effects of mobile phone use or pollution on the male reproductive system. The new study was not to check just one particular parameter, but a number of those thought to affect sperm count.
Previously, researches have claimed that pollution and radio frequency waves from mobile phones took a toll on the reproductive ability of men.
In June, Hungarian researchers said that those who placed their mobile phones near their groin, on a belt or in a pocket, were at the greatest risk of having their sperm count reduced.
The study found that those sperms that did survive mobile phone radiation exposure showed abnormal movements, further reducing the fertility.
However, Britain's National Radiological Protection Board, which has reviewed research into health effects of exposure to radio frequency waves, including mobile phones, have so far said that the waves were safe. The World Health Organisation stresses that more studies are needed".

Men carrying a mobile phone in a hip pocket or in a belt holster could put their sperm quality at risk, according to a report published by the U.K's Royal Society Wednesday.
The report, based on a study, said: "Storage of mobile phones close to the testes had a significant negative impact on sperm concentration and the percentage of motile sperm. These trends suggest that recent concerns over long- term exposure to the electromagnetic irradiation emitted by mobile phones should be taken more seriously."
The study was conducted under the auspices of the University of Western Australia and based on samples collected from 52 heterosexual men. The samples were assessed using World Health Organization guidelines.
The study found that those men who carried a mobile phone in their hip pocket or on their belt had lower sperm motility and a lower sperm concentration than men who carry a mobile phone elsewhere on the body.

Just a diagram with alternative places to keep a mobile around the person. Suggestions. Pointers, if you will.
